Dangerous Minds

Stage 5

The proposed extension of gallery Belvedere 21, Vienna, Austria questions “how those in power have used Freud’s theories to try and control the dangerous crowd in an age of mass democracy”.

The project exposes the roots and methods of consumerism, commodification and their implications. It questions the modern way people see themselves, the attitudes to fashion, and superficiality. Combining it with a context of project history and site as well as protagonist Viennese architects Haus-Rucker-Co and their design agenda, the architectural design strategy of the project challenges the power of the authority within the society of spectacle.

The change of building function and its adaptation to the ever-changing context throughout the years provides an asylum for those who are meant to be imprisoned for the acts of challenging the commodity system through art.

The extension utilises a use of new technology to provide the architectural spaces, also facing the environmental issues, whilst representing a slow political change spreading within the city.
